Legend (Paperback)
David Gemmell
Book 1 In The Drenai Saga

Legend is the classic Drenai novel from the British master of heroic fantasy, a powerful tale of courage and sacrifice in the face of overwhelming odds. His name is Druss.

The stories of his life are told everywhere. But the grizzled Drenai veteran has spurned a life of fame and fortune and retreated to the solitude of his mountain lair.

The fortress is Dros Delnoch And it is the only route through the mountains for the invading army of the Nadir. The fortress was once the Drenai's greatest stronghold - now it will be their final battleground. And Druss their last hope.

What We Think

We think that, as a big fan of this sort of heroic fantasy, I love all our children equally. But I love David Gemmell books more equally than the others. So take this as the view point of a massive fan - Legend is an excellent book at the start of an even better series. We even like the backstory of the writing of the book ('like' probably isn't the right word). Gemmell wrote the first draft of the story as a metaphor for the cancer scare he was going through - with the story being set around the attack of a fortress.

Legend was first published in the 1980s, so if you are expecting cutting edge fantasy, this isn’t the book for you. It is, however, a classic example of an important fantasy book in the ‘Swords and Sorcery’ type books that got us to where we are now.

It’s good. If you are even half interested you should just read it.
