When it comes to crime fiction the most obvious sub genre would be police procedural crime. And it's an absolutely massive part of the genre. You can have a main character all the way from the lowliest constable all the way up to the top end of a police force. Admittedly most are detectives, but even there you get a lot of variety. A British detective story tends to play out differently to a Danish detective story. The Danes tend to go for the darker end of the genre for a start. A different still would be the whole body of work coming out of the USA. For a start someone is almost certainly going to get shot at some point.
