Collection: Crime Fiction

Crime is easily one of the most popular book genres. Which probably says more about the human psyche than we would like. It's not a new phenomenon either. We were going to talk about Sherlock Holmes to prove how old the genre is, but we had a look and it turns out Arthur Conan Doyle was late to the game. Arabian Nights (One Thousand and One Nights) includes crime stories from the medieval Middle East.

Even so it's changed a bit since even Conan Doyle was on the scene. There are so many different types of crime fiction. You have police procedurals, historical crime, cosy crime (where murders are a bit less brutal and grizzly) scandinoir, tartan-noir (which is almost always brutal and grizzly). There is even a series of books where an oceanographer solves crime. And it's written by a relative of a former British Prime Minister. It starts with 'The Sea Detective' if you are interested.

We had a very weird afternoon researching the genre.
